On the Amazonian border between Peru and Brazil, the forests of the native communities Nueva Bella and Sawawo Hito 40, located in the province of Atalaya in Ucayali, reveal an extraordinary biological richness.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
During the evaluations carried out between July 7 and August 5, specialists together with local community members documented a high diversity of flora and fauna species, reaffirming the importance of these territories as key natural refuges for conservation in the Ucayali region.<\/p>\n

Photo: Jofre Torres<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The study is part of the progress towards the creation of Private Conservation Areas in the communities of Nueva Bella and Sawawo Hito 40, a proposal promoted by the communities with the support of ProPur\u00fas and the Conserva Aves initiative, led by Profonanpe and ECOAN in Peru. Preliminary results show an outstanding ecological richness in both communities:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Nueva Bella Native Community<\/strong><\/p>\n Sawawo Hito 40 Native Community<\/strong><\/p>\n Among the species recorded during the assessments were several considered of conservation importance, according to the List of Threatened Species of Legally Protected Wildlife of Peru (D.S. 004-2014-MINAGRI). Macaws <\/span>Ara macao<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Ara chloropterus<\/span><\/i> y <\/span>Ara ararauna <\/span><\/i>are classified as Vulnerable (VU), a category that indicates that their populations face a high risk of disappearing in the wild due to habitat loss and illegal trafficking. Likewise, species such as the mealy parrot (<\/span>Amazona farinosa<\/span><\/i>), the giant urir\u00ed (<\/span>Nyctibius grandis<\/span><\/i>), the crowned heron (<\/span>Pilherodius pileatus<\/span><\/i>) and the hummingbird Phaethornis ruber are considered Near Threatened (NT), a status that indicates that they could become threatened if pressures on their ecosystems continue. In addition, there are species that are indicators of well-conserved environments, such as the sunbird (<\/span>Eurypyga helias<\/span><\/i>) and the mosquerito (<\/span>Tyranneutes stolzmanni)<\/span><\/i>, whose presence reinforces the ecological value of the territory and evidences the integrity of the forest that the communities seek to protect.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n These records confirm that the Yurua forests harbor a diversity comparable to the most pristine areas of the Peruvian Amazon, consolidating their ecological relevance within conservation efforts led by indigenous communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The natural wealth of these communities is no coincidence: it is the result of years of community management and sustainable practices that prioritize forest protection against the threats of logging and land trafficking. Through Field Schools, the community members of Nueva Bella and Sawawo Hito 40 are trained in territorial surveillance, environmental governance and use of technological tools such as GPS to strengthen the monitoring of their territory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cOur forest is our life. Photo: Jofre Torres<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The information gathered in these assessments will serve as the basis for the creation of the Private Conservation Areas in the Nueva Bella and Sawawo Hito 40 communities, which seeks to protect more than 25,649.30 hectares of Amazonian forests, home to endangered bird species and valuable ecosystems that regulate the climate and sustain local life.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The project is part of the international initiative Conserve Birds, led by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC), National Audubon Society (Audubon), BirdLife International, and the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC), with the participation of ECOAN, Profonanpe, and ProPur\u00fas, and financial support from the Bezos Earth Fund.
