{"id":44368,"date":"2025-05-16T10:36:46","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T15:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/?p=44368"},"modified":"2025-07-01T18:42:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T23:42:38","slug":"acp-huata-towards-a-new-paradigm-of-self-sustainable-community-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/acp-huata-hacia-un-nuevo-paradigma-de-desarrollo-comunitario-auto-sostenible\/","title":{"rendered":"ACP Huata: towards a new paradigm of self-sustaining community development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panoramic view of the proposed private conservation area - Huata\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photography: Jonathan Chancasana\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The proposed implementation of the Huata ACP has allowed the development of workshops focused on the textile and pedagogical process, as well as the implementation of a community nursery.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since July 2024, a number of activities have begun to transform local perceptions of conservation and have <\/span><b><i>The Huata Private Conservation Area (PCA) proposal has attracted increasing interest. <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed intermittently since the beginning of the project, these initiatives maintain the vision of self-sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include activities such as <\/span><b><i>environmental education<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at children and adolescents, the <\/span><b><i>embroidery as a productive alternative<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for mothers, and a <\/span><b><i>community nursery<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oriented to the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to training and learning, the actions carried out have achieved <\/span><b><i>raising community awareness<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding the message that conservation not only protects the natural environment, but can be an opportunity for sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Community nursery: restoration and sustainability\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first strategies that helped promote conservation actions in the ACP was the installation of the community nursery in Huata. Its construction responded to the increasing deforestation observed in the area, the change in land use for agricultural purposes and the negative effects of forest fires, such as the loss of native biodiversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the communal nursery, different short- to long-term sustainable recovery strategies were initiated. Its main objectives are the <\/span><b><i>propagation of native species for restoration<\/i><\/b> <b><i>y<\/i><\/b> <b><i>production of agrosustainable species of interest to the community.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to strengthen local agroforestry systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to implementation, coordination meetings were held to define the working group and the location of the nursery. The support of the villagers, together with the social projection group \u201cSumaq Allpa Tarpuy\u201d of the Universidad Peruana Los Andes, allowed the installation of the nursery and the following results:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction of a communal nursery of <\/span><b><i>30 m\u00b2.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consolidation of a board of directors and a work team made up of the following members <\/span><b><i>13 commoners.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The planting of <\/span><b><i>542 avocado seeds with<\/i><\/b> <b><i>72 germinated to date,<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This allowed training in sustainable agroforestry to a population that has it as one of its main agricultural activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collection of <\/span><b><i>450 cuttings, 50 cuttings and 11 seed species<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of various native species<\/span><b><i>.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All this material is in the nursery of the Universidad Continental -a collaborating institution-, where it is being treated for its future use in the restoration and propagation of species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This activity has achieved <\/span><b><i>encourage community participation and promote the idea that conservation and productivity can go hand in hand.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Through the implementation of sustainable agroforestry or the restoration of degraded areas, the community has begun to <\/span><b><i>internalize the importance of a balanced and sustainable community development.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44370\" src=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-771x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-771x1024.jpg 771w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Foto-2-vivero-1-scaled.jpg 1205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seedling nursery production\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photography: Leidy Pallarco\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Embroidery workshops: art and conservation\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, in view of the growing expectation of the creation of the ACP, the residents have shown interest in <\/span><b><i>the<\/i><\/b> <b><i>conservation can also become a family's economic livelihood<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They even want it to be linked to <\/span><b><i>the preservation of the species of interest together with art and tradition<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to achieve a deeper connection with their natural and cultural environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, the embroidery workshop initiative seeks to strengthen the skills of the women of the community, promote creativity and rescue traditional techniques that the community maintains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first session, participants learned about basic embroidery stitches and were introduced to the importance of depicting native birds and plants in their designs. Since the beginning of the implementation of the ACP, it was observed that the people of Huata showed great interest in recognizing, understanding and knowing the relevance of the species within the ecosystem. For this reason, environmental education has been a fundamental pillar of the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing it seeks to raise awareness from an early age about the importance of conservation. Through interactive and dynamic workshops, we have worked with Huata's educational institutions in order to <\/span><b><i>s<\/i><\/b><b><i>To make your students aware of the value of biodiversity and the role they can play in protecting it.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process included the presentation of a plan to parents and the holding of five workshops on specific dates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting to know my birds\u201d: October 14, 2024\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRainbow Walk\u201d: October 15, 2024<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting to know my environment\u201d: November 18, 2024<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA day with wings\u201d: November 19, 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEcosystem doctors\u201d: December 16, 2024<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, a presentation of the achievements was made to the parents of the community during the year 2024. All this, thanks to the proposed implementation of the Private Conservation Area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental education, the community nursery and the embroidery workshops demonstrate that <\/span><b><i>it is possible to strike a balance between community development and biodiversity protection.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The commitment of the inhabitants and the joint work with various institutions are making it possible to <\/span><b><i>to lay solid foundations for the consolidation of the Huata Private Conservation Area.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As these initiatives grow stronger and become self-sustaining, the idea that the <\/span><b><i>conservation is not a constraint, but an opportunity for the well-being and development of the entire community.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The change in the communal paradigm that is being generated by the creation of the ACP is helping to <\/span><b><i>generate new spaces for conservation.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to give continuity to the development of these activities, each strategy will continue to be improved and new conservation actions will be implemented. In this way, it will be possible to <\/span><b><i>strengthening the community's commitment to preserve and care for natural resources<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
