Participatory Conservation of the Tropical Andes in the department of Jun\u00edn \u2013 Peru<\/b><\/p>\n

Thanks to the joint work between the Calabaza Population Center, the Regional Government of Jun\u00edn, the Yunkawasi Civil Association and the Provincial Municipality of Satipo, the following is coming <\/span>promoting birdwatching as a sustainable economic alternative, <\/i><\/b>in the heart of the cloud forests of Satipo.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These coordinated efforts have allowed Calabaza <\/span>to promote their own sustainable development initiatives by forming a birdwatching association. <\/i><\/b>This aims to strengthen the capabilities of its members and promote the improvement of its equipment and tourism infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Regarding these initiatives, a meeting was held in the area in March. <\/span>participatory study on the diversity of bird species and the identification of potential tourist routes in the town center.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A proposal for diversity<\/b><\/p>\n

The Calabaza Population Center is located in the proposed Regional Conservation Area (ACR) San Crist\u00f3bal de Pucut\u00e1 \u2013 Menkori, an initiative of the Natural Resources and Environmental Management of Jun\u00edn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Its purpose is <\/span>to conserve more than 60,000 hectares of natural wealth <\/i><\/b>and promote a development model that benefits local communities, guarantees their quality of life and<\/span> safeguard the responsible use of resources<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conserving bird diversity is one of the main objectives of this upcoming protected area in Jun\u00edn. The project is located in the <\/span>stage II of its establishment process, <\/i><\/b>and has the technical and financial support of the Yunkawasi Civil Association, Rainforest Trust, Andes Amazon Fund and the Conserva Aves initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pumpkin: home to numerous birds<\/b><\/p>\n

Only in the Calabaza area have they been reported <\/span>more than 100 different species of birds<\/i><\/b>, among them<\/span> some endemic species that make Calabaza a <\/span>a destination of high interest for birdwatching worldwide.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Among the unique species of Peru, the Oxapampa antpitta stands out (<\/span>Grallaria centralis<\/span><\/i>) and the Jun\u00edn antpitta (<\/span>Dark Grallaria<\/span><\/i>), as well as the Jun\u00edn tapaculo (<\/span>Scytalopus gentryi<\/span><\/i>) and the Jalca tapaculo (<\/span>Scytalopus frankeae<\/span><\/i>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For more than 10 years, the inhabitants of the Calabaza Population Center, also located within the Avireri-Vraem Biosphere Reserve, have opted for birdwatching tourism as a <\/span>source of sustainable development.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, they have a hostel under construction, several restaurants to serve their visitors, and local guides who accompany birdwatchers visiting the area to identify the main species.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sustainability and next steps<\/b><\/p>\n

The organized population of the Calabaza Population Center has as its next great challenge <\/span>participate and stand out in the Global Big Day 2025<\/i><\/b>, a global birdwatching event that will take place on May 10th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As an ally of the San Crist\u00f3bal de Pucut\u00e1 \u2013 Menkori Regional Conservation Area proposal, Calabaza aims to\u00a0 <\/span>to distinguish itself and position itself as a key destination for birdwatching at the regional and national level.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
