He <\/span>Northwest Peru Mangroves Consortium (CONMANOPE),<\/i><\/b> with the leadership of <\/span>The Regional Government of Tumbes continues to advance with the project \u201cCreation of the Regional Conservation Area (ACR) Mangroves of Los Tumpis\u201d<\/i><\/b>. As part of this effort, systematic monitoring of birds and vegetation cover is being carried out, along with blue carbon studies, which provide fundamental data for the effective and sustainable management of the mangrove ecosystem. These advances are essential for consolidating a conservation area that benefits both the environment and local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bird and Vegetation Cover Monitoring<\/b><\/p>\n

Since January 2024, the project has carried out extensive <\/span>monitoring the relative abundance of key birds<\/b> of the ecosystem, identifying<\/span> 13 species <\/b>prioritized<\/b> according to the monitoring protocol. Among the species observed are the <\/span>Buteogallus subtilis<\/i><\/b> (mangrove hawk) which has been prioritized by Conserva Aves, since it is categorized as threatened by the IUCN and also has the prioritization of the National Sanctuary of the Mangroves of Tumbes; <\/span>Eudocimus albus<\/i><\/b> (ibis) which has a high presence in the La Culebra Estuary and El Venado beach, being a species that fulfills an essential function in the nutrient dynamics of the mangrove and is one of the most abundant birds in the monitoring area; and the <\/span>Setophaga petechia<\/i><\/b>, a migratory and resident bird that is an indicator of the health of mangrove forests, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition, a <\/span>monitoring of the vegetation cover of the mangrove ecosystem<\/i><\/b> whose objective is<\/span> determine and quantify the composition<\/i><\/b>and structure of the flora<\/b>. This process includes the <\/span>ecosystem zoning <\/i><\/b>depending on the types of forest (mangrove and dry forest) and the use of <\/span>satellite images and vegetation cover maps<\/i><\/b> at a scale of 1\/10,000 to design sampling strategies. Also, they have been established <\/span>plots of<\/i><\/b> permanent sampling,<\/i><\/b> where a <\/span>flora inventory<\/i><\/b>, collecting and identifying key species and assessing their diversity and structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the calculation is being made <\/span>Importance Value Index (IVI)<\/i><\/b> to determine the frequency, density, and abundance of tree and shrub species in these plots. This diagnosis will allow <\/span>identify the conservation objects<\/i><\/b> and the <\/span>indicator species of environmental changes or pollution,<\/i><\/b> facilitating planning for the creation of the ACR and its sustainable management.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blue Carbon: A Strategy for Climate Change Mitigation<\/b><\/p>\n

The project also addresses the estimation of<\/span> blue carbon, <\/i><\/b>A crucial aspect of climate change mitigation. It is being carried out <\/span>studies to determine accumulated blue carbon<\/i><\/b> in the mangroves of Tumbes, which will provide data on the capacity of this ecosystem to act as a carbon sink. This analysis is essential for <\/span>strengthen climate change mitigation efforts<\/i><\/b> both locally and globally, as well as a mechanism for the financial sustainability of the ACR proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significant Progress<\/b><\/p>\n

Through funding from Conserva Aves, this project has made substantial progress by <\/span>joint work with local communities<\/i><\/b>. Associations of artisanal fishers and harvesters play a key role in the <\/span>ecosystem governance and sustainability<\/i><\/b>, actively participating in the <\/span>monitoring of the relative abundance of priority bird species and in the control of vegetation cover.<\/i><\/b> These activities allow or<\/span>To obtain data that guides the protection of threatened species and the structure of the mangrove ecosystem<\/i><\/b>. Furthermore, the <\/span>blue carbon study <\/i><\/b>The mangroves of Tumbes are generating valuable information about the <\/span>capacity of these ecosystems to capture and store carbon,<\/i><\/b> contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. This information not only highlights the environmental value of the area, but also<\/span> It reinforces the proposal for financial sustainability and the long-term conservation projection.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
