The DCI Project aims to help reduce GHG emissions caused by deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in six specific regions: Amazonas, Hu\u00e1nuco, Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Mart\u00edn, and Ucayali.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The event was held in the auditorium of the Tahuari Hotel in Pucallpa on July 17 and was attended by 20 community members from 10 communities in the Ucayali region. This workshop focused on the selection and training of community forest guardians, who are responsible for monitoring and tracking the implementation of the Management Declarations (DEMA).<\/p>\n

The dialogue session was attended by Cecilia Flores, manager of the DCI Project, who provided a comprehensive overview of the project, highlighting the progress and results achieved to date, as well as other representatives from Profonanpe.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollaboration with local communities is essential for effective and sustainable forest management. This workshop is a crucial step toward ensuring that community members have the tools and knowledge they need to protect our forests,\u201d said Cecilia Flores.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), through the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), presented the results of the technical assistance provided for the development of the 2023 DEMAs. These results have enabled communities to formally become forest managers and, as a result, market their forest products with legal provenance. In addition, they outlined their community forest management activities scheduled for 2024.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Forest and Wildlife Resources Supervisory Agency (OSINFOR), for its part, focused on the obligations of holders of land use permits (DEMA), emphasizing the importance of compliance in indigenous and rural communities. The workshop also included interactive sessions where participants were able to ask questions directly to the experts.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In addition, Community Forest Monitoring and Control Committees were established with the participation of the Ucayali Regional Government, thereby strengthening the organizational structure for forest management in the region. This initiative aims to ensure constant and effective oversight of forestry activities.<\/p>\n

The DCI Project and its partners will continue to work closely with the indigenous communities of Ucayali, ensuring that their capacities are strengthened and that sustainable forest management that benefits everyone is promoted.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) \u2013 Phase 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2014, Peru signed a cooperation agreement with the countries of Norway and Germany, called Joint Declaration of Intent - JIU, which was extended in 2021 with the inclusion of the United Kingdom and the United States as observers. This agreement seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our country, which are produced as a result of deforestation and degradation of Amazonian forests. The DCI will allow us to access payment by results for the reduction of verified GHG emissions.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The DCI is led by the Ministry of the Environment and implemented by Profonanpe, with the participation of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, through SERFOR; the Ministry of Economy and Finance; the Ministry of Culture; the regional governments of San Mart\u00edn, Hu\u00e1nuco, Ucayali, Loreto, Amazonas, and Madre de Dios; and the indigenous organizations AIDESEP, CONAP, and ANECAP.
