{"id":31568,"date":"2023-10-23T04:39:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T09:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/?p=31568"},"modified":"2023-11-20T04:58:22","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T09:58:22","slug":"delegacion-del-global-environment-facility-gef-llego-al-peru-para-ver-los-avances-y-oportunidades-en-la-gestion-de-areas-naturales-protegidas-y-los-proyectos-de-conservacion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/delegacion-del-global-environment-facility-gef-llego-al-peru-para-ver-los-avances-y-oportunidades-en-la-gestion-de-areas-naturales-protegidas-y-los-proyectos-de-conservacion\/","title":{"rendered":"A delegation from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) arrived in Peru to assess priorities and opportunities in the management of protected natural areas and conservation projects."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">GEF delegation headed by Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez, together with representatives of civil society organizations and implementing agencies<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the framework of the XXV RedLAC Congress 2023 Cusco \u2013 Peru, Profonanpe received the delegation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and held a meeting in Lima together with implementing agencies and civil society organizations that dedicate efforts to the implementation of conservation projects in protected natural areas and other areas of global importance for adaptation and mitigation to climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Global Environment Facility, a key global fund for mobilizing resources to implement projects in various countries across the region, has worked alongside Peru&#039;s Ministry of the Environment and has been a strategic partner for decades in channeling funding for the sustainable management of protected natural areas and the implementation of projects aimed at combating biodiversity loss and addressing climate change. Therefore, its collaboration with implementing agencies and local organizations has been essential in ensuring that the initiatives implemented meet global standards and are both inclusive and sustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting took place after a discussion between Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez, CEO and President of the GEF, and the Minister of the Environment, Albina Ruiz, where they discussed the priorities of Peru&#039;s environmental agenda. Peru, a megadiverse country, is among the main recipients of GEF funding. Over the past 30 years, the GEF has impacted the lives of 10 million Peruvians and contributed to the establishment and management of protected natural areas covering an area equivalent to the size of Uruguay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31573\" src=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-1024x696.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-768x522.jpg 768w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-1536x1045.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/IMG_3032-2048x1393.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez, CEO and President of the GEF, and former Minister of the Environment of Costa Rica, led a meeting with the participation of civil society organizations from Peru<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, in a meeting with implementing agencies and civil society organizations, Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez highlighted the importance of coordinated work among the various actors involved in environmental projects, and called for positioning and highlighting the role of women, indigenous peoples, and young leaders in initiatives funded by the GEF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visit continued with a trip to Manu National Park, one of the main protected natural areas located in Cusco, where, with the help of the National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State \u2013 SERNANP, the delegation was able to learn about the coordinated work carried out with the park rangers for the sustainable management of this area, which is one of the most biodiverse on the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delegation, headed by Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez, also participated in the closing ceremony in Lares for the GEF Agrobiodiversity GIAHS Project, an initiative funded by the GEF and implemented by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and administration by Profonanpe. For the past four years, this project has been working with farming communities in Arequipa, Apur\u00edmac, Cusco, Huancavelica, and Puno to conserve agrobiodiversity and restore vulnerable ecosystems
