Protecting this resource is not only the responsibility of Peruvians but also of the planet.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe, pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, the study shows the intervention scenarios of possible negative impacts from poor management by communities of non-timber forest resources (fruits of Amazonian palms, hydrobiological, medicinal, ecosystem services, etc.), where models of sustainable economic activities (biobusinesses) are being generated, through a governance of the territories, implemented by Profonanpe together with 7 native indigenous peoples: Awaj\u00fan, Achuar, Chapra, Kandozi, Kichwa, Wampis and Shawi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30633\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30633\" src=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/025_PHD-GustavoCarrasco-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pastaza Fan (Datem del Mara\u00f1\u00f3n province, in Loreto) is a natural asset that stores more than 6,700 million tons of carbon, equivalent to 901,300 tons of emissions from all the cars in the world in one year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Datem del Mara\u00f1\u00f3n is understood as a carbon sink that is neutralizing harm beyond the national territory; it is a global asset. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose value also lies in the biodiversity and intercultural richness of its territories. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cThe potential of Datem leads academia, government, and the population to reflect on the risk if this ecosystem is damaged by the emergence of illegal mining, logging, or drug trafficking, which is why it is necessary to invest as a priority in its conservation through modern climate finance instruments and global commitments.\u201d<\/em>, said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, representatives from the governments of the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States, global players in environmental protection, traveled to Datem del Mara\u00f1\u00f3n along with the Vice Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of MINAM, Nancy Chauca, and Profonanpe, with the aim of showcasing this natural asset and the coordinated effort between government, business, and community to protect this ecosystem, as well as strengthening the State&#039;s presence in the territory for the implementation of better public services that allow the conservation of this ecosystem, so valuable for mitigating and adapting to climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the study, the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP) employed widely used methodologies for monitoring and quantifying carbon in Amazonian forests. Among its conclusions, the report warns that the main threats and risks in the area are illegal activities such as illegal mining, wildlife trafficking, roads, and limited state capacity to enforce permits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Other key data:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swamps and other peatlands play a fundamental role in mitigating climate change by preventing carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises an area of forests of <\/span><\/i><b><i>swamp<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1,142,077 ha), <\/span><\/i><b><i>alluvial floodable<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1,421,431 ha) and the forests of <\/span><\/i><b><i>mainland<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2,049,597 ha), which are the ecosystems with the largest extent in the study area, and it is understood <\/span><\/i><b><i>as the third largest carbon reservoir in the world.<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis shows that 75% of the carbon stock in the Datem del Mara\u00f1\u00f3n is stored in the soil of the peatlands with an estimated 5,251 million tCO2eq.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The present study reports a maximum peat depth of 810 cm in the town of Puerto Am\u00e9rica, which is one of the deepest sites, with the most noticeable peat thickness in the Peruvian Amazon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peat bogs are wetlands where the soil remains covered with water for most of the year. They can support large trees or only small plants such as herbaceous plants.
