June, 2021. \u2013<\/b> As a result of the great work being done to adapt to climate change, Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, received a new accreditation as a National Implementing Entity (NIE) before the Adaptation Fund, an international organization that finances projects and programs to help developing countries adapt to the harmful effects of climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With this recognition, decided by the Board of the Adaptation Fund, Profonanpe will be able to receive up to an additional 10 million dollars to finance projects focused on this problem and, with this, continue working hand in hand with the Ministry of Environment in the objective of fulfilling Peru's commitment to reduce 40% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, presented to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis important accreditation validates that our processes are internationally approved by the Adaptation Fund. It recognizes the enormous effort we are making to be an ally of individuals, the government, private companies, and organizations in fulfilling the country's environmental agenda, in this case, in terms of climate change,\u201d highlighted Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 2013, Profonanpe achieved its first accreditation before the Adaptation Fund and received this important financing with which, in 2018, it began to execute the project of \u201cAdaptation to the impacts of climate change on the coastal marine ecosystem of Peru and its fisheries\u201d together with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Production and the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This project focuses on directly reducing the vulnerabilities generated by climate change for 500 fishermen in the coves of M\u00e1ncora-Piura, El \u00d1uro, Los \u00d3rganos and Cabo Blanco in the north, and for 200 fishermen in the coves of V\u00e9gueta and Carqu\u00edn and the fishing port of Huacho-Lima in the south; at the same time, this will indirectly benefit thousands more people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to investing significant effort to be the organization that works hand in hand with the Peruvian government to advance and achieve the goals the country has set in terms of climate change. It is important to remember that Profonanpe is the financial mechanism for these issues, and being a national organization sends a global signal that Peru has strong institutions,\u201d Willems emphasized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This accreditation is valid until June 2026, at which time a new one must be requested in order to continue working on climate change adaptation and promoting the implementation of the environmental agenda in Peru.<\/span><\/p>\n
