{"id":54946,"date":"2026-08-07T01:05:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/?p=54946"},"modified":"2026-08-07T01:06:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:06:23","slug":"19-families-in-olleros-are-building-their-climate-resilience-through-a-guinea-pig-raising-venture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/19-familias-de-olleros-fortalecen-su-resiliencia-climatica-con-emprendimiento-de-crianza-de-cuyes\/","title":{"rendered":"19 families in Olleros are building their climate resilience through a guinea pig farming venture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19 families of the La Nueva Generaci\u00f3n Agricultural Producers Association in Olleros are improving their food security and diversifying their livelihoods through the implementation of this initiative. <\/span><b>\u201cGuinea Pigs for Better Eating and Living\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, supported by the project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/living-watersheds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living Basins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to promote production systems that are more resilient to climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative aims to diversify family farming and livestock production, improve the availability of nutritious food, and create supplementary income opportunities for rural families, thereby helping to reduce their vulnerability to the effects of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of this initiative, 437 guinea pigs (323 females and 114 males) were purchased, transported, and distributed from the Tauripampa area in the district of Pira. Photo: Instituto de Monta\u00f1a.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delivery of the guinea pigs marks a milestone in a process that included the construction of family-sized breeding units, the provision of equipment, training in technical management, feeding, biosecurity, and animal health, as well as specialized technical assistance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the animals arrived in Olleros, each family placed them in their respective breeding pens, marking the start of a new phase aimed at increasing family production, improving household nutrition, and boosting the local economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to its productive and economic benefits, the initiative promotes the sustainable use of the region\u2019s available resources and fosters community organization, building capacity for the development of agricultural and livestock activities that are more sustainable and better adapted to the area\u2019s climatic conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54947 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imagen1.jpg\" alt=\"Guinea pigs acquired by the La Nueva Generaci\u00f3n Association of Olleros during the acclimatization and feeding process. Photo: Mountain Institute.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a context marked by climate change, recurring droughts, and declining agricultural productivity, small-animal husbandry represents an effective measure for adapting to climate change, as it allows families to diversify their sources of food and income, thereby reducing the risks associated with dependence on a single productive activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/living-watersheds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living Basins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is implemented by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profonanpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with financing from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adaptation-fund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/AFOverview-SPANISH-11.6.2014.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adaptation Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and led by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mountain.pe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mountain Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Santa river basin, in the Ancash region.
