Sobre el evento

The project National Program for Natural Protected Areas – Pronanp has been implemented in Peru since in eight regions of the country: Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, Amazonas, San Martín, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna. This project is co-financed by the Global Environment Facility, through the Banco Mundial, and KfW from Germany; and implemented trough an interinstitutional cooperation agreement between Profonanpe, the SERNANP and eight regional governments of the country.

The main goal of this project is to contribute with the long term ecological sustainability of the protected areas of the country through the expansion of the ecological representation of the System of Protected Areas of the country and the implementation of conservation activities at different levels (national, regional and private) inside the ecological corridors.

Through the establishment of these corridors, it has been looked that several categories of protected areas and other conservation modalities among them (pre-existent or to be created) and their complementary landscapes, are managed in an integrated way through strategic alliances for the improvement of ecological connectivity, reducing the menaces in a more effective way and contributing to mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and the sustainable development of territory.

Among the main results, we can mention the following:

• The organizational and operative strengthening of the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Administration or Environmental Reginal Authorities (ARA for its acronym in Spanish), including the creation and implementation of ARA Amazonas.

• A conservation data base (priority sites for conservation) defined and formalized through several official instruments in all the regions, starting from pre-existent advances.

• 87 processes for the establishment of new protected areas and other forms of conservation, that involve 1.2 million ha.

• The strengthening of the management dynamics of around a 100 protected areas and others forms of conservation among the selected corridors.

• The implementation of 75 projects for sustainable economic activities (PAES for its acronym in Spanish) of the local organizations in the area of the protected area and other forms of conservation. An important part of these projects (25) is being articulated with programs like Agroideas and Procompite, or the participative budgets in order to make them grow in an operational scale.

• The implementation of sustainable financial pilots in the 8 regions that have involved 65 producers associations. For this, the project developed three certification courses for the elaboration of eco-businesses plans, which will allow to settle a fund from Agroideas, valued in USD 7.16 million for at least 40 business initiatives.
